Tips

1
Start with a style preset and tweak from there. It's easier than building from scratch.
2
Keep your grain bill simple: 1-2 base malts + 1-3 specialty grains is plenty for most styles
3
Balance is key. Check your BU:GU ratio to make sure bitterness matches the malt backbone.

Open formula

OG = 1 + Σ(grain_lbs × PPG × efficiency) / (batch_gal × 1000)
FG = OG - (OG - 1) × attenuation
ABV = (OG - FG) × 131.25
IBU = Σ(W × A/100 × U × 1000) / V [Tinseth]
SRM = 1.4922 × MCU^0.6859 [Morey]

Chains five core brewing equations: grain bill → OG via PPG and efficiency, yeast attenuation → FG, standard ABV formula, Tinseth IBU from each hop addition (with bigness and time factors), and Morey SRM from malt color units. BU:GU ratio measures bitterness-to-sweetness balance.

Pellet hops gain ~10% utilization. Hop stands contribute ~33% of boil-rate IBU. Dry hops add minimal bitterness. Style matching uses relaxed BJCP ranges.
